POISONOUS
VS
VENOMOUS
We want to find neither a poisonous nor venomous animal in our house under the bed! Both types of animals include toxic substances that cause physical effects.
What’s the difference between poisonous and venomous?
How the toxin is delivered is what makes the difference.
Poison is passive: You have to bite or touch the animal for its toxin to be delivered to your body.
Examples: Poison frog and some mushrooms (not an animal).
Can you think of any others?
Venom is active: Therefore, the animal has to bite or sting you for the toxin to enter your body.
Examples: A wasp and a rattlesnake.

Toxin: Harmful substances produced by some animals, plants and bacteria.
Passive: Not reacting visibly to something.
Active: Physically reacting to something.
